خلاصه داستان : داستان در ژاپن دهه ۱۹۳۰ و هم‌زمان با گذار سینما از فیلم‌های صامت به ناطق می‌گذرد. یک دختر جوان که در سینما به فروش تنقلات مشغول است، به‌طور اتفاقی وارد دنیای بازیگری می‌شود و مسیر زندگی‌اش تغییر می‌کند.

Director Ogata discovers a new female star in Koharu Tanaka, who works selling candy at a studio theater and she is given a part as a bit player. After the studio's top leading lady is embroiled in a scandal, Koharu is suddenly thrust into the limelight when she replaces her in a film and gains instant fame and fortune. But the going is not always easy, and she soon seeks help from unexpected quarters.

Blind swordsman Zatoichi, jailed briefly, is implored by another prisoner to aid him in proving his innocence of a crime for which he is sentenced to death. Zatoichi is reluctant to get involved, because he knows how often such involvement has led to trouble in the past. But events conspire to thrust him repeatedly into involvement, and gradually he comes to believe in the man's innocence and determines to free him.
